Movie Review - Dogtooth (2009)

The extreme sheltering of children is taken to a whole new level. Three homeschooled teenagers, the older daughter, son and younger daughter, have been confined to the house since birth.  Under the strict dictatorship of the father, the parents have created a weird and twisted universe for their children to dwell in. Dogtooth vividly portrays a world of pure farce and the minds that inhabit it.

Outside of the family unit, one cannot help but draw parallels between this story and countries with oppressive governments.  Words like "pussy" and "telephone" are translated to mean bright lights and salt shaker.  Planes are small toys that can fall from the sky.  Domesticated cats hunt and eat humans.  The events that follow are equal parts disturbing and humorous.  What happens when everything one person tells you is believed to be true?

This film is definitely not acceptable for the wide audience.  Anyone that has a strong aversion to incest, violence against animals, and violence against women should not watch this film.  Otherwise, it is a fascinating and thought provoking picture about how people can live under the manipulation of one person.

Dogtooth can currently be streamed on Youtube and Netflix
