Movie Review - Mother (2009)

What should a mother be to her son?  Nurturing, protective, and a little crazy is what comes to mind in Joon-ho Bong's creative and entertaining film Mother.  Her son is slow, forgetful, and now needs her the most when he is accused of murder.  After he is easily coerced to sign confession papers, his mother is the only person left searching for the real killer.

From the synopsis and the poster above one could assume that this film is filled with thrills and maybe an occasional fright.  Mother doesn't really have either of these elements, but functions as an intriguing who-did-it which gradually transforms into a character study.  What would a mother do for her son when all the odds are against him?

Like The Host, Mother is thematically more about familial bonds than it is about the murder mystery setting.  There are many oddball moments from each character in the movie which carries a surprising amount of humor despite the situation.  Hye-ja Kim, who plays the mother, gives a strong performance.  She embodies the overbearing, desperate, and emotionally burdened parent who will stop at nothing to save her child.

Mother is currently available for stream on Netflix.

Rated R for language, some sexual content, violence and drug use
